My Book World Edition 1TB

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/02/mybook-world-nas-02-18-09.jpg

Bought this cheap NAS. A little disappointed with the read/write speed.
The WD My Book World Edition took 107.1 seconds to write and 60.2 seconds to read a 1.70GB ISO file.Is this good or bad, I do not know but i guess I am comparing it to a wired HD.
I use it with a mac and it mainly holds all media that I stream to the AppleTV. Terence and Chris what are the NAS you guys use and can you comment. I plan to buy one more later on but those expensive ones are definitely out la.
Well, the reason I went for this is because of the price ITB S$160.Very easy to set-up.

Performance review here and turns out there's a whole wiki on hacking these things with Linux.Interesting.

A must for sales folks and trainers

Combat

These are Luke's soldier and it's amazing how in 2010 he can have so much fun with it just like I did more than 30 years ago.Only, now , some sets look really good. He took these sets out after watching the soldiers in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Terence, I have been getting these messages from you from time to time. Was wondering, if I am the only one.

Make a cheap table look expensive

Recently, I restored an old table that my parents in-law wanted to throw away. Just 3 hours of labour and RM20 restored it to look like new. Although, if I have seen this at that time, I may have given it a more vintage look. The table I restored turned out to be a little bit more glossy than what I wanted. (Selected a wrong lacquer)

Hoot

Luke made this at school and he told me the owl's hair is just like mine. He told me , it is specially made for me.

Beatles on iTunes finally......yeah....yawn.

Apple - The Beatles - Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964

Steve Jobs is known to a be a big Beatles and Bob Dylan fan.Dylan I like but The Beatles while they are simply fantastic and ground breaking ..not so much.

Rewarding Success?

On Saturday Daniel and I got up early to got to school as usual. It was "Hari Anugerah" for students who did well from Std 1 - 6. In SFI the awards would have been Anugerah Franciscan but here is was Johanian la (being St John).

Anyway, the dude on Daniel's right is Geoffrey Gerald who came in first in class and overall best in Std one (he picked up 2 trophies)...flanking him on the far left is Hafizan (picked up 3 awards) and Daniel Azmi who came in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Daniel bagged the Overall Best Mathematics Award (Std 1) to Gwen and my surprise la coz he's quite careless where counting is concern (boys I guess).

But I would like to know what you guys think as I always have this conversation with Gwen that we should promote rewarding effort more as opposed to success. I'd like to take the saying of the man himself - be perfect just as your Father in Heaven is perfect". Of course we know we cannot be perfect but so long as we strive for that perfection or to be a better person or to do it to the best of our ability (Age Qu0d Agis).

Having said that, there was an award for each student year for "most improved student" but it was just a "by the way thing" but at least they had it. Please don't get me wrong about rewarding success....i feel its ok but our kids might just expect that each time and hence making the process of working towards that success just a little tainted.

While driving home Daniel kept his trophy close to him (proud I'm sure) but I told him what matters most is how hard he tries and that he should always encourage others to do just the same. No matter what results he gets in his tests or exams each "A" (86 - 100 marks), I'll normally give him RM1. Perhaps I should throw in RM0.50 for a "B" and RM0.10 for a "C". But whatever the case a treat for them will be on the cards after all has ended no matter what the result.

Activities for the kids

Faye, wants to go learn ballet and really enjoys it. She has been going for a 2 months on weekends and well, she is a natural when it comes to dancing. Luke is not much of a dancer and well at times his moves can look a little painful to watch. He goes for a Mandarin speech and drama class every Thursdays. He too enjoys it and usually looks forward to it.
As for us, as long as we can afford it, we are most happy to send them for the things they enjoy as long as it's not the usual TV and electronic games.
